Additionally, Sennett's first female comedian was Mabel Normand, who became a major star under his direction and with whom he embarked on a tumultuous romantic relationship. Sennett also developed the Kid Comedies, a forerunner of the Our Gang films, and in a short time, his name became synonymous with screen comedy which were called "flickers" at the time. Long before there was Twentieth Century-Fox, there was the William Fox Studios at Allesandro St. in what was then called Edendale.

These types of five-globe streetlights (called 'Winslow' Llewellyn Electroliers) were originally installed on all streets in Downtown Los Angeles in the early 1900s, (except for Broadway which had the seven-globe lights). Today, the last of these poles are still being used as architectural features in the gardens and malls adjacent to City Hall. The Hazard and Harpham Patent Office moved to a building on the southeast corner of Fifth and Spring streets (see next photo). The Herald Examiner would move into a new, larger building in 1914, located at the southwest corner of Broadway and 11th Streets.

Wright’s San Francisco Office (

Silver used the house as a private residence and as a location for several of his films, including “Lethal Weapon” and “Die Hard.” In 2006, Silver sold the house to a private buyer. Silver uses a modified design from one of the textile blocks of the Storer House for the logo of Silver Pictures. The Storer House is made of concrete blocks, which were a relatively new building material at the time. Wright used the concrete blocks to create a series of geometric patterns on the exterior of the house.

This color scheme became iconic for LARy and was maintained throughout much of its existence. The yellow streetcars were a familiar sight on the streets of Los Angeles during the early 20th century, contributing to the city's vibrant and bustling atmosphere. Agricultural operations, which account for roughly 75 percent of water use in California, have also increasingly pursued water-saving innovations in the years since the 1977 drought. Drip irrigation, which first appeared on the California scene around 1970, is now a standard practice in many areas and cropping systems. Innumerable other technologies and practices that save both money and water are supported (and sometimes mandated) by the state and local governments.

The original Baltimore Hotel seen above, the two-toned building with the conical tower located on the NE corner of Olive and 7th streets, would become the future site of the Los Angeles Athletic Club (built in 1911, occupied in 1912). All viaducts are a type of bridge, but not all bridges are viaducts. The key difference between a viaduct and a bridge is that a viaduct is a long, elevated structure that carries a road or railway across a valley, gorge, or other low-lying area, while a bridge is typically used to cross a body of water. What makes the Fletcher overcrossing a viaduct and not a bridge is that it is an elevated, arched structure used to carry transportation infrastructure across a gap in the terrain, rather than over a river, lake, or other body of water. San Pedro was named for St. Peter of Alexandria, a Fourth Century bishop in Alexandria, Egypt. His feast day is November 24 on the local ecclesiastical calendar of Spain, the day on which Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo discovered the bay in 1542 which would be known as San Pedro.

The house was commissioned by Dr. John Storer, a homeopathic physician, who was a friend of Wright’s. The house is located on a steep hillside, and Wright designed it to take advantage of the views. The house is built on a series of terraces, and the living room opens onto a large terrace with stunning views of the city. But California has often endured water scarcity throughout its history, and each occasion has brought its own challenges. Out of those challenges have come valuable lessons, and as the current dry spell becomes more severe it is worth remembering— and learning from—the state’s long history of unpredictable weather fluctuations. The colonnade, made up of dozens of Corinthian columns supporting Venetian-style arcade buildings on Windward, Pacific, and Market avenues, still serves as the gateway to the city and is one of Venice's most recognizable landmarks.

The patterns are both decorative and functional, as they help to shade the house from the sun. A powder room with a floating marble sink and a dining area with access to an interior courtyard are off the kitchen. Lion Canal, was renamed Windward, it stretched from the bathing lake, or lagoon past Saint Marks Island to Cabrillo Canal. The Aldebaran  Canal would later become Market Street after the canals were filled ca. The Venice Canals were originally conceived by developer Abbot Kinney in 1905 as part of his vision to create a "Venice of America" in what is now the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles. Inspired by the famous canals of Venice, Italy, Kinney aimed to recreate a romantic and picturesque waterfront community.
